Frequently Asked Questions

What Insurances do you accept?

We accept most commercial insurance plans. During the scheduling process we will confirm that your insurance is in network. We offer no-interest payment plans tailored to each patient if needed when a patient has a large deductible or copay, or is uninsured or out of network.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your driver’s license and insurance card, a copy of the prescription for your scan, and a list of your current medications. If you have had prior imaging done to the area being scanned, please bring the most recent images so they may be compared to your current scan.

Should I bring my prior imaging?

If your previous exams were performed at our facility, we already have those scans on file and you do not need to bring them.

If you have had a prior imaging study at another institution and it is of the same body part being examined at Neuro Imaging Winter Park, please bring them to your appointment so they may be compared to your current study.

What should I wear to my appointment?

You may wear regular clothes or street clothes to your appointment, however, all metal objects will have to be removed due to image artifacts.

Some athleticwear such as Lululemon and other types of athleticwear may contain metal and should not be worn. If your clothes are not compatible with the scanner, a hospital gown will be provided to change into.

Before your MRI begins you will be directed to a changing room with a locker where you can store your clothes and personal belongings.

Do I need to fast before my scan?

Certain types of exams may require the patient to fast prior to their imaging. The duration and type of fasting may vary based on the type of exam. During your scheduling call with our office, you will be advised of any fasting requirements for your scan.

When will my doctor get the results?

After your examination is completed, the images are sent digitally to our subspecialty-trained radiologist for interpretation. Once the onsite radiologist reviews all of the images, they will issue a report. The report is then faxed or delivered to your doctor’s office.

Most results are available the same day, or by the next morning at the latest.

If your case is an emergency, the radiologist will speak verbally to your referring doctor as soon as the scan is finished.

A copy of the disc of your images is available upon request.

How long will my exam take?

An MRI will typically last between 15 and 30 minutes per body part being scanned.

A CT scan typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes, although certain scans could take a long as 30 minutes.

Is the MRI or CT completely enclosed?

No. The our 3-Tesla MRI and our CT are both open at both ends (at the head and at the feet).

What are my options if I am claustrophobic?

Claustrophobic patients are often anxious about the MRI experience, usually triggered by the thought of lying in a long narrow tube. However, modern MRI’s have much shorter and wider cylinders than in years past, making the experience much more comfortable for claustrophobic patients. Sometimes, the patients head doesn’t even need to be inside the gantry, depending on the body part being imaged.

Some MRI’s are constructed with only a top and a bottom, leaving the sides open. These are referred to as open MRI’s. Because the sides are open, the actual image quality of open MRI’s is somewhat lower than a standard MRI.

At Neuro Imaging Winter Park, we have one of the shortest and widest MRI cylinders available in the world for MRI’s, ensuring the most positive experience possible. If you are still concerned about claustrophobia, our radiologist will also prescribe oral medication for onsite sedation. You don’t need a prescription from your referring doctor or need to take medication in advance of your appointment. Simply tell our office staff at the time your exam is scheduled and we will make the appropriate arrangements.

If you are scheduled for sedation, you must have a driver with you at the time of the appointment. A ridesharing service or taxi is not accepted as a driver.

How does MRI work?

MRI uses a magnetic field in combination with radio waves to create an image. There is no radiation associated with MRI.

How does CT work?

CT uses a rotating beam of x-rays to produce very thin images of the body.

What will I hear during my MRI?

The MRI machine does make a low banging sound. However, ear plugs will be provided to each patient to help drown out the noise.

Patients may request a genre of music to play in the scan room during their scan.

Can I have an MRI even though I have metal in my body?

Certain types of metal may be unsafe in an MRI machine. Please speak with our staff to determine your individual safety profile.

Do I have to remain still during the exam?

Yes. It is extremely important that patients not move during the scan. Any minor movement can make the images unreadable and will require repeating the scan. However, patients will only have to remain motionless for a period of 2 to 7 minutes at a time. Small breaks will be given during an MRI exam to allow patients to relax.

Do I need contrast?

The decision to administer intravenous contrast is determined either by the referring doctor or the onsite radiologist.

There are two types of contrast: oral and intravenous. Oral contrast is a barium or gastrografin based drink that is given to most patients receiving an abdomen or pelvic CT. This allows the radiologist to differentiate the small and large bowel from other structures in the abdomen.

Intravenous contrast is used for both MRI and CT and is given to patients with certain diseases or suspected diseases.
